Transgender Mental Health in the Military

Nationwide, 0.58 percent (nearly 1,400,000) of individuals identify as transgender.[ Reference 1 ] In the 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey report conducted by the National Center for Transgender Equality, 18 percent of respondents had served in the U.S. military as compared to 9 percent of the U.S. population. In 2016, the Defense Department released new policy (DoDI 1300.28 and Directive-type Memorandum (DTM) 16-005, “Military Service of Transgender Service Members”) to allow service members identifying as transgender to serve openly. It is imperative that psychological health care providers are aware of terms, policies, treatment guidance and resources available.
