Prevention strategies for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can reduce the impacts from trauma on individuals and society. There is still limited information on interventions for prevention of PTSD. [1]

After exposure to or surviving a traumatic event, individuals may experience symptoms of posttraumatic stress, such as being unable to stop thinking about the traumatic event, or fear, anxiety, anger, depression, or guilt. These symptoms are common reactions to trauma and most individuals exposed to trauma will not develop PTSD. [2]

However, following exposure to trauma, getting support may prevent these stress reactions from getting worse and prevent an individual from turning to unhealthy coping methods, such as substance misuse. Suggested support strategies include:

  • Talking with family and friends

  • Seeking help from a mental health provider for a brief course of therapy

  • Consulting with a chaplain or other faith leader within the community
