Taeniasis

Etiologic agents

  • Taenia saginata (beef tapeworm)
  • T. solium (pork tapeworm)

Clinical Features

  • Produces only mild abdominal symptoms. Occasionally appendicitis or cholangitis can result from migrating proglottids.
  • Risk of development of cysticerosis with Taenia solium.

Transmission

  • Ingestion of eggs through contaminated food sources.

Diagnosis

  • Microscopic identification of eggs and proglottids in feces.

Prevention

  • Adequate cooking or freezing of meats.
