Pentagon Weighs Cleanups as It Plans Iraq Exit (1/26/2010)

As the U.S. military prepares to leave Iraq, the Pentagon is wrestling with questions about environmental cleanup on the bases it plans to transfer to the Iraqi Army by December 2011. At issue on and around the bases are unexploded ordinance, depleted uranium from munitions, spilled oil and contaminated ash in burn pits.

Judges Consider New Factor at Sentencing: Military Service (1/5/2010)

A small but growing number of judges say U.S. military veterans should be treated differently from nonveterans when they are sentenced for crimes. Many veterans returning from war zones develop behavioral and psychological problems, which in some cases leads to alcohol and drug abuse -- and crimes.

Military Confidentiality Rules Raise Counseling Questions (12/7/2009)

Pfc. Jeffery Meier, who struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder and drug addiction after two deployments to Iraq, got an appointment in August to see a psychiatrist at Fort Carson, Colo. But when he arrived for his first session, he was asked to sign a waiver explaining that under certain circumstances, including if he admitted violating military laws, his conversations with his therapist might not be kept confidential. He refused to sign.

U.S. Army: Troop morale falls in Afghanistan (11/17/2009)

Military also points to shortage of mental health workers to aid soldiers
Morale has fallen among soldiers in Afghanistan, where troops are seeing record violence in the 8-year-old war, while those in Iraq show much improved mental health amid much lower violence, the Army said Friday. Soldier suicides in Iraq did not increase for the first time since 2004, according to a new study.

Prospective assessment of neuropsychological functioning and mood in US Army National Guard personnel deployed as peacekeepers (11/16/2009)

The study examined the impact of deployment on neuropsychological functioning and mood in Army National Guard personnel. The hypothesis that deployment on a peacekeeping mission, compared to non-deployment, would result in reduced proficiencies in neuropsychological performance and negative mood changes, and that such changes would relate to working in a high-strain job (high demands/low control), in accordance with Karasek's demand-control model.

Stryker: Lieutenant recovers from blast that claimed his legs
Lt. Dan Berschinski, 25, steadies his left prosthetic leg before putting it on and standing for the first time last week at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. No one knows how long the bomb lay under the packed earth of southern Afghanistan. How many times had the soldiers stepped over it? Each member of Lt. Dan Berschinski’s platoon had, at least twice. The Fort Lewis officer figures he walked by the area two times with no problems.

Returning troops hit by alcohol abuse, depression (11/6/2009)

Alcohol abuse and depression are common among British troops returning from conflict deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan but post traumatic stress is less of a problem than previously thought, researchers said. A study by British psychiatrists found that more than 27 percent of troops suffer post deployment mental health problems, but only around 5 percent have post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) -- a debilitating illness that can be caused by wartime trauma. There were was little difference in levels of PTSD symptoms between British and U.S. troops deployed to Iraq.

Suicide Toll Fuels Worry That Army Is Strained (11/4/2009)

Sixteen American soldiers killed themselves in October in the U.S. and on duty overseas, an unusually high monthly toll that is fueling concerns about the mental health of the nation's military personnel after more than eight years of continuous warfare.

When Specialist Jaymie Holschlag returned home after 12 months in Iraq, a new set of children awaited her. Her son, Seth, 10, who had moved in with his grandfather, switching towns and schools, was angry and depressed. His grades had plummeted and his weight had ballooned by 60 pounds. Her 4-year-old daughter, Celeste, scarcely knew her.

U.S. troops in Iraq have time on hands (10/30/2009)

Pfc. Adrian Vesik heard that war could be hell. He was happy to discover when he arrived in Iraq earlier this year that his war experience also would include salsa dancing, yoga and martial-arts classes. Many troops express relief at the diminished threat of injury or death. Yet some say they have struggled with depression because they don’t feel like they are going enough.

Experts Explain Challenges Associated With Environmental Exposures (10/23/2009)

A panel discussion on environmental exposures featured three prominent medical experts from the Departments of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Defense (DoD). They spoke of the types of frequent exposure concerns, how medical surveillance programs could help detect exposure effects, and how medical providers should interact with affected veterans.
